The Alex Stern series is Leigh Bardugo's dark adult fantasy set around Yale University and New Haven. After surviving a terrible crime, she is offered a place at Yale and recruited by Lethe House, the group meant to watch the eight secret societies and keep their magic from getting out of hand.

That job is never as tidy as it sounds. Alex enters a world of old money, inherited confidence, locked libraries, cryptic records, and people who assume their status will protect them. She is an outsider in every sense, and the series uses that position to examine power, class, trauma, loyalty, and the stories institutions tell about themselves.

In Ninth House, Alex investigates a murder while learning the rules of Lethe and Yale's underground world. Hell Bent sends her and a small group of allies after a way into the underworld, despite orders to leave the dead alone. Dead Beat continues the larger conflict as demons threaten New Haven and Alex must confront secrets tied to Yale, Lethe, and her own history.

Darlington, Alex's polished and idealistic mentor, is an important counterweight to her hard-edged approach. So are Dawes, Turner, Mercy, and the other allies who gradually become part of Alex's fragile support system. Nobody gets through these books by being purely good or purely fearless.

This is not campus fantasy in the cozy sense. The mood is eerie, violent, and often sad, with mysteries that build across the series rather than neatly ending at the close of each book. Readers should expect ghost stories, occult investigation, moral messes, and a lead character who keeps moving even when she has very good reasons to run.
