Shadow and Bone books in chronological order
Series background & context
The Shadow and Bone trilogy is the opening chapter of Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse. It begins in Ravka, a country cut in half by the Shadow Fold, a vast darkness filled with winged predators. Crossing it is dangerous, but leaving it untouched means the country remains divided and vulnerable to enemies on every side.
Alina Starkov starts as an orphan and a mapmaker in the First Army. She has grown up alongside her closest friend, Mal, and expects little more than another hard day of military service. Then an attack in the Fold reveals that Alina has a rare power, one that may be able to destroy the darkness and change the balance of power in Ravka.
She is taken to the Little Palace, where the Grisha are trained and commanded. There, Alina has to learn how to use her ability while dealing with court attention, military expectations, and the magnetic influence of the Darkling, the leader of the Second Army. Her new importance gives her opportunities, but it also makes it difficult to know who is helping her and who is using her.
Nothing stays simple for long.
Shadow and Bone is about discovery, first love, and the shock of realizing that your life may matter to an entire nation. Siege and Storm expands the map and sends Alina and Mal into a hunt for allies and magical amplifiers while the danger from the Darkling grows. Ruin and Rising brings the trilogy's war and personal conflicts toward a final reckoning.
The books blend adventure, romance, and Russian-inspired fantasy elements without requiring readers to memorize a huge cast at the start. Alina's point of view keeps the story close to one person's changing sense of herself, even when the stakes become national.
This trilogy is the best place to begin if you want the Grishaverse in story order. It introduces Ravka, the Grisha, and events that echo through later books. Readers who enjoy chosen-one stories with more complicated choices, dangerous magic, old myths, and a steadily widening world will know quickly whether they want to continue on to Ketterdam and beyond.
