Series background & context
The Kenzie Gilmore books are Florida crime thrillers built around a smart, stubborn reporter who keeps stepping into stories that other people would rather leave alone. Kenzie starts out as an investigative journalist in Miami, and from the first book, Afterburn, she is pulled toward cases where wealth, violence, and public image do not line up.
She is not working alone for long. A big part of the series is her uneasy, then increasingly trusted partnership with Reid Garrett, a cop with deep ties to the Everglades and the rougher side of South Florida policing. Kenzie's instincts and Reid's law-enforcement experience make them a strong team, but the books do not pretend that journalism and police work always fit neatly together.
The setting does a lot of heavy lifting. Miami here is glossy on the surface and dangerous underneath, a place of waterfront mansions, storm-battered coastlines, Little Havana backstreets, and swamps that can swallow evidence. Cases move through the Everglades, high-society parties, trafficking rings, drug networks, cold cases, and even hurricane zones, so the series keeps changing shape without losing its identity.
Heat, money, and bad decisions are everywhere.
As the books go on, the personal side matters more. Kenzie and Reid have to work out what they mean to each other while still handling murders, missing people, and enemies who know exactly where to hit them. Kenzie's own career shifts too. The early books lean on newsroom reporting, while later stories, such as Gilt Edge, show her moving into true-crime podcasting and a more modern, media-savvy kind of investigation.
The tone is fast, readable, and grounded. These are not puzzle-box mysteries so much as page-turning crime stories where the stakes feel immediate and the city feels alive. If you like journalists who take risks, detectives who carry their cases home, and crime fiction with humidity, speed, and a real sense of place, Kenzie Gilmore is an easy series to sink into.
