The Dalton Savage books are small-town, western-leaning crime thrillers set in Hawk's Landing, a Colorado community ringed by mountains, harsh weather, and old local loyalties. The series begins with Savage Grounds, but the real appeal is bigger than any one case: each book drops Sheriff Dalton Savage into a town where the landscape is beautiful, the politics are messy, and danger can come from both outsiders and neighbors.

Savage is not a blank-slate lawman. He carries a past in Denver homicide work, and that history keeps feeding the present, especially when cases drag him back toward the city or toward enemies who remember him. At the same time, he is trying to build a stable life in Hawk's Landing with Becca and their growing family, so the books constantly balance public duty against private strain.

The crimes themselves range widely. Pearce and L.T. Ryan use missing hikers, drug wars, murdered protesters, serial killers, long-buried skeletons, land disputes, and local legends without letting the series feel random. What ties it together is the sense that Hawk's Landing sits at the meeting point of wilderness and human ambition. New development, tribal land, biker gangs, drought, wildfire, and winter all change the shape of the threat.

This is crime fiction with dust on its boots and snow in its headlights.

Savage works with deputies, family, and occasional outside help, but these are still books about responsibility landing on one person's shoulders. He has to keep a town functioning while the ground shifts under him. Even when the story opens wide, the emotional focus stays local: who belongs, who is lying, and what people will sacrifice to protect their version of home.

If you like police procedurals that also feel a bit like frontier drama, this series is a good fit. It mixes action with community detail, and it gets a lot of mileage out of the simple fact that remote places can hide trouble for a very long time.
