Author bio
Biba Pearce grew up in South Africa, with an English mother and a South African father, and books were part of daily life early on. She has said she read anything she could get her hands on, moving from childhood adventure stories to the crime and romance novels that would later shape her own work.
Reading came first.
Writing followed in a less glamorous setting. While working a data-entry job in London, Pearce took a romance-writing course and started building a novel in spare moments, sometimes during quiet stretches at work, sometimes at home in the evening. That early manuscript sat with her until digital self-publishing became a real option, and she used the web skills she had picked up in other jobs to get it into the world.
For years, romance was where she wrote, even though crime was what she reached for as a reader. A friend's blunt question, why are you always writing romance when you mostly read crime, helped push her in a new direction. Pearce started studying craft more seriously, became a Faber Academy alumna, and began shaping the kind of suspense novels she clearly loved.
That switch changed everything.
Her British police procedural The Thames Path Killer introduced DI Rob Miller and set the tone for much of what readers now expect from her: tight pacing, strong settings, and detectives whose cases leak into their private lives. The books that followed, including The West London Murders and The Marlow Murders, stayed close to the Thames and southwest London while widening the emotional pressure on Rob and his team.
Pearce did not stop with one lane. In Afterburn, she moved to Miami and paired investigative reporter Kenzie Gilmore with ex-cop Reid Garrett for a faster, hotter style of crime thriller. In Savage Grounds, written with L.T. Ryan, she shifted again, this time to small-town Colorado, where Sheriff Dalton Savage deals with wilderness, drugs, local politics, and violence that rarely stays contained. More recently, Cold Reckoning opened the door to the colder, darker Avril Dahl novels set in Sweden.
Across those series, a few things keep showing up. Pearce likes outsiders and truth-seekers: detectives under pressure, journalists who ask one question too many, veterans carrying damage, and women who refuse to back away when a case turns personal. She also likes places that do real work in the story, the Thames, the Everglades, mountain towns, and snowbound Scandinavian streets. The setting is never just wallpaper.
Her work has picked up industry notice along the way. She has been recognized by the Feathered Quill and the Crime Writers' Association, and The Marlow Murders won Best Crime Fiction at the 2024 Indie Excellence Book Awards. She now writes full time, mentors other authors, runs Mortlake Press, and is active in the crime-writing community.
These days Pearce lives in Surrey. When she is not writing, she has said she is happiest walking in the countryside or kayaking on the Thames, which feels very on-brand for a writer who so often puts water, weather, and danger to work.
