Author bio

Kate Novak grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and studied chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh, earning a Bachelor of Science. That practical background sits beside a writing career built mostly in fantasy's large, shared settings, where a story has to make room for old lore while still getting a new adventure moving.

One early title, Lady of the Winds, appeared in 1984 as part of the choice-driven HeartQuest line. It puts the reader in the role of Ivee, a young woman leaving home with her horse and facing choices about magic, danger, and romance. It is a useful reminder that Novak's work was not limited to one world or one kind of fantasy story.

Then came the Forgotten Realms books that many readers know best.

Novak is married to game designer and writer Jeff Grubb, and the pair wrote several novels together. Their Finder's Stone sequence begins with Azure Bonds, a fast-moving adventure about Alias, a swordswoman who wakes with strange blue marks on her arm and no memory of how they got there. Her search for answers brings together a memorable group, including the halfling Olive Ruskettle, the mage Akabar, and the saurial Dragonbait.

The story continues in The Wyvern's Spur and Song of the Saurials. The books shift the spotlight between characters and keep returning to the magical Finder's Stone, the bard Finder Wyvernspur, and problems that grow much bigger than the people who first stumble into them. There are curses, missing artifacts, troubled families, old grudges, and gods who are never as distant as anyone would like.

The group dynamic is a big part of the fun.

Novak and Grubb returned to Alias and Dragonbait in Masquerades, set in the dangerous city of Westgate. Here the adventure leans into criminal guilds, civic power struggles, and the Night Masks, giving the pair a more urban problem to untangle. In Finder's Bane, the focus moves to Joel, a young priest of Finder, whose mission takes him from the Realms to the strange planar city of Sigil while enemies work to restore the dead god Bane.

Tymora's Luck carries that thread forward with divine trouble centered on the rival goddesses Tymora and Beshaba. Joel, Holly Harrowslough, Jas, and a new companion are drawn into a race to stop a scheme that could reshape the luck of the whole Realms. The stakes are huge, but the stories stay close to people trying to do the right thing with imperfect information.

Novak's bibliography is compact, but it connects several corners of game-related fantasy. Her books are a good fit for readers who enjoy quest parties, magical mysteries, lively supporting characters, and shared worlds that leave room for adventure without requiring a rulebook at hand.

Her best-known work also crossed into games. Azure Bonds inspired the computer role-playing game Curse of the Azure Bonds, extending Alias's story beyond the page and helping keep these characters in the conversation for years afterward.
