Heart Quest Books in Order

HeartQuest is a short line of interactive fantasy books. Rather than following one fixed path from first chapter to last, these stories put the reader in the main character's place and ask them to make choices along the way. Those choices can change the route through the adventure, the people met, and the kind of ending reached.

Kate Novak's contribution is Lady of the Winds, the sixth and final HeartQuest book. The reader becomes Ivee, a peasant girl whose favorite companion is her horse, Dowell. When her stepfather plans to sell Dowell and force Ivee into a marriage she does not want, she leaves home looking for a future that belongs to her.

It begins with a decision to go.

Ivee's journey mixes the dangers of a fantasy quest with romantic choices. Silvar, a young apprentice wizard, and Prince Shar, leader of a desert tribe, both become important possibilities in her story. The book lets readers decide whether Ivee's path leads toward a desert prince, magical training, or one of the other routes opened by their choices.

That format is the point of HeartQuest. Instead of asking only what the hero will do, it asks what you would do when home has become impossible, magic is nearby, and a risky new life is calling. The adventure is self-contained, so it does not require familiarity with the Forgotten Realms or Novak's later work.

The tone is lighter and more personal than a sprawling campaign novel. Ivee's worries about freedom, friendship, love, and keeping her horse safe give the fantasy stakes a direct, immediate feel. Readers can revisit the book to take another path and see how a different decision changes the shape of the journey.

Start with Lady of the Winds if you want Novak's early, choice-driven fantasy. It stands alone within the HeartQuest line, and its branching structure makes it a different experience from her later novels.
