The Kate Logan books are romantic legal suspense novels set around Washington, D.C. Kate is a defense attorney trying to do right by her clients while managing the demands of her own complicated life. The cases are the engine of the stories, but Heggan also gives Kate family pressure, old wounds, and a relationship that grows in the middle of investigations.

Start with Suspicion. Kate is already working to clear the son of her housekeeper after he is convicted of murder when her ex-husband, Eric, turns to her for help. He is being blackmailed by a call girl, then the woman is killed and Eric disappears. Kate's thirteen-year-old daughter, Alison, wants her father found, which makes a bad situation even more personal.

Kate cannot simply walk away from either case.

To sort through the two murders, Kate works with homicide detective Mitch Calhoon. Mitch is practical, skeptical, and close enough to the case to understand how quickly an investigation can become dangerous. Their developing attraction adds tension, but the focus stays on the search for connections between the victims, the people with something to hide, and the powerful figures who would prefer the truth stayed buried.

Moment of Truth returns to Kate as she tries to establish her own Washington practice. A large fee tempts her to defend Todd Buchanan, the son of a Supreme Court justice, in the two-year-old murder of his wife. The case becomes especially difficult because the victim was Mitch's sister. Kate believes Todd may not be guilty, but taking him on puts her at odds with the detective she cares about and leads her into the guarded world of Washington influence.

These are compact, case-driven books with a late-1990s and early-2000s feel. Expect lawyers, detectives, family conflict, missing people, and secrets involving status, money, and reputation. Kate is not a flawless super-sleuth. She is a working attorney who has to make choices with consequences, often while people around her are asking for more than she can easily give.

Read the books in order, Suspicion followed by Moment of Truth. Each novel has its own central crime, so the mystery in either book can be followed on its own. Reading in sequence gives the best view of Kate's relationship with Mitch, her role as Alison's mother, and the personal threads that carry from one hard case to the next.
