Chuck Logan Books in Order

Chuck Logan was born in Chicago in June 1942, a week after the Battle of Midway. He has called himself a war baby, and the phrase fits. His parents split when he was still an infant, and he grew up knowing only scraps about his father, a professional boxer, trainer, and promoter who used Logan as a ring name. His mother pushed him toward books and drawing, hoping art might give him a steadier road.

As a boy he spent time at Georgia Military Academy in College Park, Georgia. One of his clearest early memories was teaching himself to draw by copying Bill Mauldin's war cartoons. Those two influences, military life and the habit of watching closely, stayed with him.

In 1953, while his mother was moving west with him, she was killed in a car crash near Marion, Kentucky. Logan survived the wreck and later marked the date and time with a 777 tattoo on his left forearm. He then lived with relatives in Arizona before finishing high school in Warren, Michigan, the first place where he stayed in one school for more than a year.

At 18, he walked.

He attended Monteith College at Wayne State University in Detroit, an experimental liberal arts program, and also spent time on the debate squad and fencing team before drinking got him bounced from both. After that came factory work, bar life, and eventually the Army. He volunteered for the draft in 1967 and later served thirteen months in Vietnam with small infantry advisory teams in Quang Tri Province.

Minnesota came next. Logan moved there in 1969, drew underground cartoons, helped organize Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and got sober in 1976. Not long after, he joined the St. Paul Pioneer Press as a staff artist. In 1985, under editor Deborah Howell's mentorship, he began writing seriously.

Two early novels didn't sell.

A friend in the newsroom, John Camp, later famous as John Sandford, suggested a different route. In the mid-1990s Logan published Hunter's Moon, then built the Phil Broker books, including The Price Of Blood, The Big Law, Absolute Zero, Vapor Trail, After The Rain, and Homefront. Readers tend to come for the pressure of the plots, but they stay for the people, veterans, cops, reporters, families under strain, and the way Logan uses Minnesota cold, lake country, border towns, and small communities as part of the story.

He could step outside Broker when he wanted to. South Of Shiloh uses Civil War reenactors and regional grudges for a different kind of suspense, while Fallen Angel follows a wounded Army helicopter pilot living with traumatic brain injury and missing memory after Iraq. Across the books, the same concerns keep showing up: what war leaves behind, what loyalty costs, and how people try to build a life after damage.

Logan has long lived in Stillwater, Minnesota, with his wife, photographer Jean Pieri, and family. He wrote through years of cancer treatment and later returned to Broker with the prequel Broker. The work has changed shape over time, but the core feels steady, tough people, hard choices, and the sense that the past is never quite finished with you.
