Justice Flanagan Books in Order

The Justice Flanagan books are historical crime novels set in New York around 1800, when Wall Street was young, the waterfront was rough, and the city had very few reliable ways to keep order. Paddy Hirsch uses that moment well. Money, politics, gangs, and personal loyalty are always colliding, so each investigation feels bigger than a single crime.

At the center is Justy Flanagan, an Irish American trying to live as an honest man in a city that makes honesty hard. In The Devil's Half Mile, he returns home as a young lawyer and starts digging into the truth about his father's death. That private search quickly opens into a wider story about financial fraud, street violence, and the people who profit when official power looks the other way.

By Hudson's Kill, Justy is working as a city marshal, which gives him a little authority but not much safety. He moves between City Hall, the docks, and poorer neighborhoods, never fully belonging to any of them. That uneasy position is one of the series' best ideas. He can speak to respectable men in offices, but he also knows how the city behaves after dark.

The setting matters as much as the mystery. This is New York before a modern police force, before the clean mythology of old Manhattan, and long before finance learned to hide its violence behind polished language. Hirsch keeps the city crowded and physical. You feel the mud, the wharves, the cramped lanes, the racial tension, and the constant pressure of a place growing faster than its rules.

Kerry O'Toole becomes especially important in Hudson's Kill, where the murder of a young Black girl pulls the story into questions of race, land, and who gets counted as worth mourning. The books do not treat corruption as a side issue. It is built into the city itself, from gang territory to property schemes to the ambitions of men who think progress excuses anything.

These are not cozy mysteries.

They are tense, violent, and rooted in history, but they are also very readable. Hirsch likes the mechanics of an investigation, and he also likes showing how a whole system works, who benefits, who pays, and who gets buried by the story everyone else wants to tell. If you want historical crime with a strong sense of place and a real interest in power, this series gives you that.
