Author bio

Sheila O'Flanagan grew up in Dublin, above and around the grocery shop her parents ran in the Liberties, and as a child she was usually found with a book in her hand or a story on her lips.

She always imagined herself in a job that involved books, and even applied to work in a library, but most of the offers that came her way were in finance. While she was away on holiday her mother accepted one of them on her behalf, and she found herself starting work at the Central Bank of Ireland instead of shelving novels.

Sheila began in administration and moved into dealing, learning how to trade foreign currencies, bonds and options on fast-moving markets. Eventually she became the countrys first female chief dealer, a high-pressure role that meant long hours, quick decisions and a lot of responsibility. The work was demanding, but the part of her that loved stories never went away.

In her spare time she wrote short pieces and half-finished novels, until in her thirties she decided it was now or never. She sat down, put Chapter 1 at the top of the page and finished a full manuscript. An Irish publisher offered her a contract with no advance, on the condition that she write a different book. So she went back to the beginning and wrote again. The result, Dreaming of a Stranger, was published in the late 1990s, and after a few more books and a new publishing deal she finally left financial trading to write full time.

Since then she has published a long run of bestselling novels, including Suddenly Single, Far from Over, All For You, If You Were Me, The Missing Wife, Her Husbands Mistake and What Eden Did Next. Her stories usually follow women at turning points in their lives, juggling work, friendship and family while facing awkward truths about love, loyalty and independence.

Rather than telling readers how to feel, she lets her characters make mistakes, change their minds and discover what they really want. That down-to-earth approach has resonated with readers in Ireland and far beyond. All For You won the Irish Popular Fiction Book of the Year award in 2011, and her novels regularly reach the top of the bestseller charts.

Sheila has also stepped outside contemporary settings. With the Crystal Run duology she wrote fast-paced fantasy adventures for younger readers, and with The Woman on the Bridge she turned to historical fiction, drawing on her own grandmothers experiences during Irelands struggle for independence.

Her background in finance still shows up in her work. She writes a regular business column for the Irish Times, and many of her heroines have serious jobs in banking, media or other busy workplaces, trying to keep their careers steady while the rest of life wobbles.

Away from the desk she is a committed badminton player and has served on the Irish Sports Council, bringing the same mix of discipline and enjoyment to sport that she brings to writing.

She lives in Dublin with her husband, and often spends time in Spain, whose villages and coastlines inspired novels such as The Hideaway and The Women Who Ran Away. Across all her books, her aim is simple: to tell a good story and make readers feel they know the characters well enough to miss them when the last page is turned.
