Author bio
Born in Sydney in 1944, John Flanagan didn’t start his working life in a medieval fantasy world. In fact, he spent years in the fast-paced industry of advertising. As a copywriter, he learned the art of grabbing an audience's attention quickly—a skill that would later serve him well when writing thrillers and adventure novels. After two decades in advertising, he moved into television and became a scriptwriter, eventually co-creating the hit Australian sitcom Hey Dad!. This experience in TV taught him how to write snappy dialogue and mix humor with storytelling, which became a trademark of his future books.
However, John's most famous story didn't begin in a boardroom or a TV studio. It started at home with a simple, personal mission: getting his twelve-year-old son to read. At the time, his son Michael was a reluctant reader. Like many kids his age, Michael was convinced that to be a hero, you had to be big, muscular, and powerful. Since Michael was smaller than his friends, he felt a bit left out of the hero conversation.
John wanted to show him that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. He began writing a series of short stories—one a week for twenty weeks—about a boy named Will Treaty. Will wasn't the biggest kid in the village. He couldn't swing a massive sword or knock down doors. Instead, Will had to rely on speed, stealth, and his wits to outsmart his enemies. He became an apprentice to the Rangers, a mysterious group who served as the kingdom's eyes and ears. These bedtime stories were an instant hit with Michael, and they eventually evolved into The Ruins of Gorlan, the first book in the Ranger’s Apprentice series.
The books quickly grew into a global phenomenon, loved by millions of readers for their blend of tactical action, genuine heart, and laugh-out-loud humor. A huge part of that appeal comes from the characters, particularly the relationship between Will and his grumpy mentor, Halt. John has often mentioned that Halt was based on his own sixth-grade teacher—a man who seemed stern on the outside but had a heart of gold. This grounded, human element is why the series resonates with so many people, adults included.
John didn't stop with Will Treaty. He expanded the world of Araluen with the Brotherband Chronicles, a series that focuses on the Skandians—his world’s version of Vikings. Drawing on his own love of the sea, John tells the story of Hal Mikkelson and a ragtag crew of outcasts who have to work together to sail their ship, the Heron. Later, he returned to the Rangers with The Royal Ranger sequels, introducing a new generation of heroes and proving that the story is far from over.
Today, John Flanagan lives in the beachside suburb of Manly in Sydney with his wife. When he isn't writing, he enjoys the coastal lifestyle, swimming, and playing his guitar. He continues to craft adventures that remind us of the lesson he first taught his son all those years ago: you don’t need to be the biggest person in the room to change the world.
