Author bio
Juliette Cross was born in Baton Rouge and raised in south Louisiana, and that landscape runs straight through her fiction. The moss, the bayous, the heat, and the Gothic pull of nearby New Orleans all show up again and again in her books. Even when she writes dragons, demons, or vampires, the sense of place still feels grounded.
She's also a writer with a wide range.
Cross studied creative writing at Louisiana State University and later earned a master's degree in gifted education. During graduate school, she had the chance to study under Ernest J. Gaines. That mix of formal training and deep Louisiana roots helps explain why her stories often feel both atmospheric and easy to sink into.
Her road to writing started early, but she has pointed to a few key moments. She loved stories as a kid, then a high school English assignment, writing a fictional short story in tenth grade, made the idea of becoming an author feel real. Later, reading Jane Eyre gave her a model she kept coming back to: dark romance, stubborn heroines, dangerous longing, and settings with a little shadow around the edges.
Cross began publishing in 2014, and one of the most interesting things about her career is how comfortably she moves between subgenres. Some readers come to her for paranormal romance. Others come for dark fae fantasy, dragon-heavy romantasy, or contemporary romance with a Southern setting. She has described herself as both a mood reader and a mood writer, which fits the bookshelf.
A lot of readers first meet her through Wolf Gone Wild, the opening book in the Stay a Spell series. That run of New Orleans-set romances, including Don't Hex and Drive, Witches Get Stitches, and Grim and Bear It, blends witches, werewolves, vampires, and grim reapers with family banter, humor, and plenty of heat. It is playful on the surface, but the emotional stakes are real, and that balance is a big part of the appeal.
Her darker fantasy work shows another side of her. The Wraith King and The Beast Lord lean into war, prophecy, and dangerous fae bargains. Firebird moves to an alternate ancient Rome ruled by dragons. Earlier books like Forged in Fire and Darkest Heart show her long-running interest in angels, demons, hidden powers, and uneasy alliances between enemies.
She likes a world with teeth.
Cross can also switch gears completely. Books like Bright Like Wildfire, Parks and Provocation, and Peaches and Dreams trade monsters for small-town sparks, but they keep the same interest in strong chemistry, sharp dialogue, and characters who have to work for their happy ending.
These days, she still lives in Louisiana with her husband, four children, and a lively collection of pets. She has talked about loving quiet nights at home, family gatherings, and a good old fashioned. That mix of domestic calm and dark romantic imagination feels like a pretty good summary of the books, too.
