Author bio
John C Maxwell is a leadership teacher who has spent decades talking about influence, character, and growth in plain language. He is also an ordained minister, and a lot of his leadership education started in the messy, human work of serving in churches.
He was born in Garden City, Michigan, in 1947. His father was a pastor, and Maxwell grew up in a ministry family that moved when the next assignment came along, including a move to Ohio while he was still young. That childhood gave him an early view of how communities work, and how much trust matters when you are trying to lead people.
Maxwell trained for ministry, earning a bachelor's degree at Circleville Bible College and later graduate degrees from Azusa Pacific University and Fuller Theological Seminary. In the 1970s and 1980s he pastored churches in several states. Over time he came to a simple conclusion that shows up again and again in his books, leadership is less about position and more about how you treat people.
One of his most visible seasons in ministry was as senior pastor of Skyline Church in the San Diego area, where he served for years and helped grow the congregation. As he coached staff and volunteers, he started turning what he was learning into talks and written material, then into training efforts that reached beyond the church world. Eventually, leadership development became his full-time focus.
He likes big ideas, but he tries to keep them usable on Monday morning.
If you have read Maxwell before, you have probably noticed his style, he turns lessons into clear frameworks, then fills them with stories and practical questions. Developing the Leader Within You is built around the idea that your influence starts where you are. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and The 5 Levels of Leadership give readers a shared vocabulary for what is happening inside teams, cultures, and organizations. And in Good Leaders Ask Great Questions, he argues that the quality of your leadership rises or falls with the questions you are willing to ask, and the curiosity you bring to the answers.
A recurring theme in his work is growth, not as a slogan, but as a daily choice. That is why he writes so often about habits, feedback, and learning from hard moments. In Failing Forward, the goal is not to avoid mistakes, it is to respond to them with humility and keep moving with better information.
Alongside writing, Maxwell has built organizations that train and coach leaders, including groups like EQUIP and the John Maxwell Company. His materials have been used in workplaces, nonprofits, and faith communities around the world. His books have sold more than 20 million copies, and he has received recognition for his work in leadership and service.
Today he continues to speak, teach, and develop leaders, and he has served as a teaching pastor at Christ Fellowship in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He and his wife, Margaret, have two children, and he often frames leadership as a long game that shows up in relationships first.
His best work reads like a conversation, then a set of next steps.
