Author bio
Cathy Maxwell grew up in Olathe, Kansas, in a family where stories and history were part of everyday life. That mix stayed with her. Long before she was publishing bestselling historical romances, she was already drawn to the way family legends, old hurts, and big emotions could shape a life.
After college, she started out in television news. Then she took a turn that sounds like the setup to one of her own bold heroines. She spent six years in the Navy, worked in Naval Intelligence, and also had a tour at the Pentagon.
That background matters.
Maxwell's books may be full of dukes, earls, and Regency ballrooms, but they also have movement, risk, and people forced to make hard choices. She has said that reading Jennifer Blake's Fierce Eden made something click for her. She had always wanted to write a book, and that novel showed her the kind of story she wanted to tell.
She began writing in 1991, while raising three children, working full time, and handling a household while her husband traveled. Her writing hours were early, very early, from four to seven in the morning. It was disciplined, unglamorous work, the kind that builds a career one page at a time.
It paid off. Her first novel, All Things Beautiful, announced themes readers still come to her for: strong-willed women, proud men, emotional bargains, and love stories with real trouble built in. Over the years she went on to write books like The Wedding Wager, A Seduction at Christmas, The Bride Says No, Lyon's Bride, and His Secret Mistress. Readers often pick her up for the lively banter and stay for the mix of tenderness, family conflict, and just enough danger to keep the plot moving.
A lot of her stories are set in Regency England, but they do not feel boxed in by drawing rooms. Maxwell likes road trips, storms, kidnappings, secrets, stubborn sisters, and marriages that start for all the wrong reasons. Scottish settings turn up often, too, especially when she wants a little extra wildness in the air. Even when the setup is playful, there is usually something real underneath it: loneliness, class pressure, old shame, or the simple fear of trusting the wrong person.
She has published more than thirty-five romance novels and five anthologies, many of them landing on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. Several books were nominated for Romance Writers of America RITA Awards, and she has also received honors including RT Book Reviews' Love and Laughter award and the Kathleen Gilles Seidel Legend award from Washington Romance Writers.
These days, Maxwell says she is in West Virginia. She has also long described Virginia as home, and her life outside the books includes charity work, speaking to readers and writers, and traveling to research new stories. Her motto is travel light, which feels about right for a writer who moved from newsroom to Navy to bestseller lists without losing her taste for adventure.
