Author bio
Alyssa Maxwell is the historical mystery pen name Lisa Manuel uses for a body of work built around two places she clearly loves, Gilded Age Newport and post-World War I England. She was born in Flushing, New York, and spent much of her youth in New England, where an early love of history began to take hold. Trips to Great Britain and Ireland only deepened that interest, and it is easy to see how those landscapes and old houses found their way into her fiction.
She has said that she wanted to write novels from an early age. Before publishing fiction, she worked in books and publishing as a reference editor, ghostwriter, and fiction editor, which gave her a close look at how stories are shaped on the page. She has also spoken openly about years of rejection before things clicked, which makes the steady growth of her career feel earned in the best possible way.
Newport got to her early.
On her author bio page, Maxwell talks about visiting Newport as a teenager, then returning again and again because the harbor streets, old neighborhoods, and deep layers of history kept pulling her back. On one of those later visits she met the man who became her husband. Marrying into a generations-old Newport family opened still more doors for her, from family stories to old graveyards, colonial houses, and the long local memory that now runs through the Gilded Newport books.
That connection led directly to the series many readers know first, beginning with Murder at the Breakers in 2014. The Gilded Newport Mysteries follow Emma Cross, a sharp young reporter who is both a Vanderbilt cousin and an outsider to the family's immense wealth. Books like Murder at Marble House, Murder at Kingscote, and Murder at the Elms mix real mansions, real historical figures, and neatly built murder plots. Murder at the Breakers became a USA bestseller and was later adapted for Hallmark Mystery, which widened her audience even more.
She did not stop with Newport. Maxwell also launched the Lady and Lady's Maid books, starting with Murder Most Malicious, and built a second historical mystery world around Lady Phoebe Renshaw and her maid, Eva Huntford. Those novels, including A Pinch of Poison, A Devious Death, and A Fashionable Fatality, lean into the pleasures of an upstairs-downstairs mystery while keeping one eye on the social changes that followed the Great War.
Across both series, certain things keep showing up. Women who are smarter than the people underestimating them. Big houses with hidden corners. Families protecting their names. Social rules that look polished from the outside and much messier from within. Maxwell has said she enjoys the challenge of solving crimes without modern forensics, and that puzzle-loving instinct gives her books their steady, clue-driven feel.
She clearly likes old houses almost as much as old secrets.
For many years she lived in Florida, where she and her husband made their home and where she stayed active in the mystery community. More recently, after more than forty years in the state, the two moved to California. Even there, the picture still fits her books nicely: hikes, bike rides, antiquing, museums, and a lasting attachment to Newport, the place that first helped turn her love of history into fiction.
