Iain Cameron was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved south to Brighton in the early 1980s. He later lived in Crawley and now makes his home in a village near Horsham in West Sussex. He is married and has two daughters, and older author notes also mention a lively Collie in the household.
He did not come to fiction by a straight line.
Before writing seriously, Cameron worked as a qualified accountant and spent years in the computer, telecommunications, and financial services worlds. Other biographical notes also place him as a management consultant and a nursery goods retailer. When the last two companies he worked for both went bust, he took the hint, stepped back from corporate life, looked after his children, and gave more time to writing.
That shift did not begin from zero. By then he had already built up a backlog of ideas, outlines, part-finished novels, and completed drafts. He has also said that instead of waiting around for inspiration, he writes ideas down and develops them, so when it is time to draft, he knows what he wants to write.
His best-known books are the DI Angus Henderson novels, set in Sussex. One Last Lesson introduces a Scottish detective working far from home, dealing with a murdered student and a case that reaches into university life. From there, books like Driving Into Darkness, Fear the Silence, and Red Red Wine show what Cameron does especially well, steady police work, strong local detail, and crimes that keep getting more tangled the deeper the investigation goes.
He likes respectable surfaces and messy secrets. In Girls on Film, a missing photographer leads to a dangerous hidden world. In Blood Marked Pages, the murder of a Brighton author turns on what was taken from a bookcase, not just who swung the weapon. Even the later Henderson books keep that pattern, starting with a clean headline and then pushing into the murk behind it.
Cameron has also written the Matt Flynn thrillers, which widen the map and raise the stakes. The Pulsar Files moves into security work, hacking, and corporate secrets, while Deadly Intent and No Time to Lose deal with terrorism, kidnappings, and enemies who do not stay in the past. His newer Sharma and Jackson novels, beginning with Eyes on You, shift the focus to Norfolk and add more missing-person tension and chase energy.
Place matters in his fiction.
Across all of these books, Cameron keeps returning to ordinary British institutions, universities, law firms, vineyards, tech businesses, police offices, and showing how quickly they can go bad when money, pride, or fear get involved. Brighton, rural Sussex, Norwich, and the roads between them do not feel like scenery. They feel lived-in, which helps give his crime novels their grounded tone.
Now based in West Sussex, he keeps writing crime fiction that stays close to everyday life even when the plots turn violent. That explains a lot of his appeal. These books are not trying to show off. They want to pull you into a case, keep you moving, and make you wonder what everyone is hiding.
