Iain Maitland Books in Order

Iain Maitland was born in south London in 1961 and spent parts of his childhood in Croydon and later Woodham, Surrey. Long before he became known for unsettling thrillers and candid books about mental health, he was paying close attention to the strain, silence and odd power games that can sit inside ordinary family life.

He has worked as a professional writer since 1987. For roughly thirty years he made his living as a freelance journalist and non-fiction writer, mostly on business, finance and consumer subjects, and he wrote more than 50 books along the way. His work was published in several countries, and he also wrote for national newspapers including the Financial Times, The Sunday Times and Which? By his own account, that work paid the bills, but it was not where he wanted to stay forever.

Around 2015, he changed course.

First came the memoir Dear Michael, Love Dad, built around the funny, often exasperated letters he sent his eldest son while Michael was away at university. The awful truth, which Maitland and his wife did not yet see, was that Michael was struggling with depression and anorexia. That family experience led to another book, Out of the Madhouse, written with Michael, about illness, treatment, recovery and the hard work of learning how to speak honestly. There is a lovely small detail here too: the audiobooks stayed in the family, with actor Michael Simkins reading Dear Michael, Love Dad and Michael narrating Out of the Madhouse with his father.

Those books are personal, but they are never stiff or distant.

Then he moved into fiction, and he went dark fast. Sweet William follows a father who escapes a secure psychiatric hospital to reclaim his son, while Mr Todd's Reckoning, later reissued as What Lies Inside, traps readers inside the mind of a deeply disturbed suburban man. The Girl Downstairs and The Perfect Husband keep that same pressure on, using cramped domestic spaces, bad choices and hidden violence to do the damage. Mr Todd's Reckoning was even optioned for television for a time, which gives some sense of how strongly that book landed.

Readers who pick up The Soulmate, The New Son or The Surrogate will find the same interests turning up again: loneliness, obsession, coercion, family strain, and people who look manageable on the surface but are coming apart underneath. Maitland does not go in for glamorous monsters. His stories are more likely to begin in a bungalow, a kitchen, a street by the sea, or a relationship that already feels slightly off. He writes a lot about lonely men and women, damaged parents, vulnerable young adults and people whose need for love curdles into control.

Place matters in his books. Maitland has long been based in Suffolk, and several of his darker novels are rooted in Felixstowe or the wider East Anglia coast. That local grounding helps. The menace in his work rarely feels imported for effect. It grows out of familiar streets, ordinary homes and communities where everybody thinks they know one another.

He has not only written standalones. He also launched the historical mystery line Bloomfield & Palmer, beginning with The Wickham Market Murder, and the police thriller series that starts with Shallow Graves. The jump from Edwardian Suffolk to a modern cold case taskforce shows how broad his crime writing can be, but the engine is much the same. He likes pressure, buried history and the moment when a seemingly normal life tips into danger.

Mental health is still a real thread through both his books and his public life. He and Michael have served as ambassadors for stem4, and Maitland has spoken about mental health in workplaces and at events. More recently he has continued expanding his fiction from Felixstowe, including publishing through his own imprint, Three Ways Press. His books can be bleak, funny, upsetting and oddly humane, sometimes all within a few pages.
