That structure gives the books a breezy feel. You can read them in order and watch the tone build, but each one is built to stand on its own. The shared promise is simple, a smart-mouth heroine, a messy situation, a hero who is usually some combination of useful and infuriating, and a plot that keeps swerving into fresh trouble.

These are not quiet romances. They are broad, fast, sexy, and knowingly silly. Peterman likes scams, misunderstandings, outrageous side characters, and a kind of comic momentum where one bad choice immediately leads to three worse ones. Even the spoof novella, Pirate Dave and his Randy Adventures, leans into that habit by turning an intentionally terrible in-world plot into the joke itself.

If you want to see where Peterman's published career started, this series is a good place to look. The supernatural mythology is still waiting in the wings, but the voice is already there. So is the affection for women who are trying to reinvent themselves while the universe, and usually the hot guy nearby, makes that much harder than it needs to be.
