Everything Changes But You

by Sarah Bennett

2025

Issy Kernow should be living the dream running a cafe on the Halfmoon Quay seafront, but grief and loneliness shadow every shift. When former teenage love Liam Penrose comes home to take over a failing hotel, old feelings resurface and both must decide how much they are willing to change for a second chance.

Series background & context

Halfmoon Quay is set on a picture perfect Cornish harbour village clinging to the edge of the cliffs. Fishing boats, seafront cafes and a slightly weather-worn hotel form the backdrop for stories about coming home, starting again and figuring out what “family” really means.

The first book, Just the Beginning, centres on Rick Penrose, the village’s unofficial handyman and problem solver. When his teenage crush Anya Stokes returns widowed and broke, with her young daughter in tow, Rick does what he always does and fixes things. He finds Anya a job at his great-uncle’s struggling hotel and encourages her to settle in Halfmoon Quay, even as he battles his own feelings and the realisation that sometimes help can slip into control.

In Everything Changes But You, the focus shifts to Issy Kernow, who runs a seafront cafe that should be a dream job but instead keeps her tied to memories of the parents she lost. Issy leans heavily on her eccentric grandmother Maud and the routines she has built, until a gift sends successful but disillusioned Londoner Liam Penrose back to the quay to take over that same faded hotel. Old teenage attraction collides with the very adult question of whether either of them is brave enough to change course.

Future books continue to explore the Penrose clan, the hotel and the wider community, each adding another layer to the village’s tangled history.

What links the stories is the sense that Halfmoon Quay itself is a character, with narrow streets, sea views and a strong opinion on anyone who dares upset the status quo. Beneath the cosy cafe scenes and harbour walks lies a deeper look at burnout, grief and the fear of letting other people down. The tone stays hopeful and warm, but it does not pretend that big life decisions are simple.

Readers who enjoy romances about returning to small towns, reconnecting with first loves and making peace with the past will find plenty to enjoy in this series, along with descriptions of stormy Cornish skies and the comfort of a well-timed slice of cake.
