Series background & context
The Butterfly Cove books are set in a peaceful coastal village that becomes a bolt hole for people whose lives have fallen apart. At the centre is a rambling guesthouse overlooking the water, a place that slowly fills with family, friends and second chances.
In Sunrise at Butterfly Cove, Mia Sutherland arrives at the guesthouse raw from loss and determined to rebuild something of her own. She pours her savings into renovating the crumbling building and vows not to be distracted, right up until her first guest, Daniel Fitzwilliam, walks through the door and gently pushes past her defences.
The second novel, Wedding Bells at Butterfly Cove, follows Mia’s sister Kiki, who turns up at the guesthouse with two young children and a marriage that has just imploded. Worried about spoiling Mia’s upcoming wedding, she accepts temporary refuge in neighbour Aaron Spenser’s cottage. What begins as a practical arrangement on the edge of the cove slowly starts to look like a new version of home.
Christmas at Butterfly Cove centres on the third Sutherland sister, Nee, a talented artist who has not picked up a paintbrush in months. She returns for Mia’s wedding knowing she will have to face Luke Spenser, the husband she left abruptly and still loves. Their story plays out against a festive backdrop of fairy lights, sea mists and difficult apologies.
Each book focuses on a different sister, but the guesthouse and the village knit the stories together into one extended family tale.
Across the trilogy, Butterfly Cove itself feels like a character, from the storms that lash the coastline to the cosy kitchens and communal meals where plans are made. The tone stays hopeful even when the characters are at their lowest, and the emphasis is always on healing, forgiveness and the way love between partners, siblings and friends can remake a life.
