Golden

by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

2006

After moving from California to Oklahoma, Lissy James lands in a school ruled by glittering Goldens and wary Nons. Her secret ability to see auras reveals a terrifying emptiness around one teacher and a danger no one else notices.

Series background & context

The Golden series is set at Emory High, a suburban school where social status is so codified that the most popular students are known as the Goldens. When Lissy James moves from California to Oklahoma, she arrives with a secret: she can see the colors of other people’s auras and read what those colors mean.

In Golden, Lissy is trying to keep her ability hidden and simply survive a new school. Her aura vision makes every hallway interaction feel loaded, and it also alerts her to something much darker. One teacher’s aura looks wrong in a way she cannot ignore, and a colorless presence at school hints at a danger no one else can see.

The second book, Platinum, shifts the spotlight to Lilah Covington, a queen bee whose beauty and ruthless confidence have put her above even the other Goldens. Lilah has always believed she controls her own destiny, but when ghostly images and flashes of the past invade her perfect life, she has to turn to Lissy and her sister Lexie for help.

Together, the girls start to unravel a decades old mystery tied to the school, their town, and the supernatural sight that runs in the James family. Secrets about who gets to be a Golden and what people have done to stay at the top slowly come into focus alongside the paranormal threat.

These books mix high school politics with eerie, almost gothic elements. Readers get cafeteria drama, cheerleaders, crushes, and gossip, but also haunted hallways, visions that will not be ignored, and the question of whether being able to read people that clearly is a gift or a burden.

At its core, the Golden series is about what happens when you can literally see beneath the surface of people who are used to being judged only by appearances, and how a few girls who seem very different on the outside end up standing together when it matters.
