Tattoo

by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

2007

Bailey Morgan and her three best friends pick out mysterious temporary tattoos for a school dance and wake up with real supernatural powers. As Bailey’s dreams darken, the girls realize they were chosen to stop an ancient, hungry enemy.

Series background & context

The Bailey Morgan books begin with four best friends at the mall, trying on dresses and planning for a school dance. Bailey, Delia, Annabelle, and Zo end up in a small kiosk where a stranger offers them elaborate temporary tattoos that seem like harmless fun and a way to stand out for a few days.

In Tattoo, those designs turn out to be anything but ordinary. Each girl gains a distinct supernatural ability that comes with both exhilaration and danger, and Bailey starts having disturbing dreams that suggest a mythic enemy is waking up. The friends quickly realize that the tattoos were never meant to be temporary, and that someone is counting on them to fight.

The sequel, Fate, picks up after the immediate crisis and follows Bailey as she juggles two identities. By day she is a high school senior worrying about graduation, friendships, and her future. By night she is literally the third Fate, part of an ancient trio that weaves the threads of the world, with a tattoo that refuses to fade.

New characters from the Sidhe, a powerful and dangerous fae race, pull Bailey deeper into a world where temptation and obligation are tightly tangled. She has to decide how much of her human life she is willing to protect, what kind of Fate she wants to be, and whether destiny is something fixed or something you negotiate.

Across both books, the tone stays light on its feet even when stakes are high. The series leans on humor, strong female friendships, and a chatty narrative voice, using magic and Celtic mythology as a backdrop for very relatable questions about growing up and choosing your path.

Readers who like their fantasy bright, fast, and centered on a tight friend group will find the Bailey Morgan duology a compact arc that still feels like a full, self contained adventure.
