Series background & context

The Inheritance Games universe begins when Avery Grambs, a smart but broke high school student, learns that Texas billionaire Tobias Hawthorne has left her almost his entire fortune. She has no idea who he is, and the will comes with one major condition: she must live for a year in Hawthorne House, his sprawling, secret filled mansion.

In The Inheritance Games, Avery moves into the estate and finds it still occupied by the disinherited Hawthornes, including four grandsons who grew up assuming the money would one day be theirs. Grayson, Jameson, Nash, and Xander each have their own way of testing and teaming up with her as they try to decode the riddles, hidden compartments, and coded messages Tobias left behind.

The Hawthorne Legacy and The Final Gambit deepen the mystery around why Avery was chosen. Clues about a long ago fire, a missing heir, and Avery’s own family history draw her into the orbit of dangerous rivals and old grudges. The original trilogy balances puzzles and high stakes inheritance battles with slowly building relationships, found family, and the question of what kind of heiress Avery wants to be.

The spin off novel The Brothers Hawthorne shifts the focus to Grayson and Jameson. In alternating storylines, Grayson travels to Arizona to help the half sisters he has just discovered, while Jameson accepts a challenge from his estranged father and infiltrates an exclusive London gambling club called the Devil’s Mercy. Their paths still loop back to Avery and to the complicated legacy of Tobias Hawthorne’s games.

Games Untold collects novellas and short pieces that fill in side stories, romantic moments, and missing years, from a whirlwind trip to Prague to a quiet night in the Hawthorne tree house. The Same Backward as Forward expands on one of those tales, telling the tragic, dual perspective love story between nursing student Hannah Rooney and Tobias Hawthorne II, the so called lost heir, and showing how the original Hawthorne Island fire reshaped the family.

Taken together, these books create a layered saga about wealth, obligation, and the pull of elaborate games. Readers who start with Avery’s first shocked reading of the will and follow through to the later spin offs will see recurring clues, payoffs, and emotional arcs that reward attention to detail and a love of riddles.
