The Fixer

by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

2015

When Tess Kendrick moves to Washington, DC, she discovers her glamorous sister Ivy is the capital’s go to fixer, cleaning up political scandals. At Hardwicke Academy, Tess starts handling problems for powerful classmates and uncovers a conspiracy that turns deadly.

Series background & context

The Fixer series follows Tess Kendrick, a ranch girl used to cleaning up messes for the grandfather who raised her. When she is abruptly shipped off to Washington, DC, to live with her older sister Ivy, Tess discovers that Ivy is the person powerful politicians call when their scandals need to disappear.

In The Fixer, Tess is enrolled at Hardwicke Academy, a school filled with the children of senators, lobbyists, and world leaders. Trying to help new friends with their seemingly small problems pulls her into the same kind of behind the scenes maneuvering Ivy does on the national stage, and a conspiracy that links a murdered student, blackmail, and a client in Ivy’s portfolio.

The sequel, The Long Game, widens the lens. Tess agrees to run a classmate’s campaign for student body president, but at Hardwicke even a school election comes with opposition research, smear tactics, and dangerous secrets. Outside school, Ivy is drawn into a case involving a terrorist attack that rattles all of Washington.

As the books progress, Tess uncovers more about her own family history and the ways she, Ivy, and their guardians are entangled in long term plans for political power. The sisters’ relationship is prickly, loving, and complicated, full of unspoken sacrifices and hard questions about how far you can go in the name of protecting someone.

Readers can expect twist heavy plotting, high stakes conversations in elegant townhouses, and tense showdowns where the most dangerous weapon in the room is information. The tone is brisk and contemporary, with emotional beats grounded in sibling loyalty rather than romance.

Taken together, the two books read like a YA mash up of political thriller and prep school drama, ideal for readers who like their mysteries served with power plays, secret alliances, and very smart teenagers walking the line between truth and spin.
