Author bio
George Mann is an English writer, editor, and scriptwriter whose work moves easily between science fiction, fantasy, crime, horror, comics, and audio drama. He was born and raised in Darlington, in northeast England, and now lives near Grantham with his wife, children, and two noisy dogs.
His bibliography has the useful feel of a very well-stocked shelf. There are Victorian detectives, masked vigilantes, haunted villages, Jedi, Time Lords, Space Marines, and a fair number of strange machines.
Mann began in publishing as an editor as well as a writer. He edited science-fiction and fantasy anthologies, including volumes in the Solaris book series, while building his own fiction career. That editorial background shows in the range of projects he has taken on, from original novels to shared-universe books, comics, and audio scripts.
His breakout original series is the Newbury & Hobbes investigations, which begins with The Affinity Bridge. Sir Maurice Newbury is an investigator for the Crown, and Veronica Hobbes is his capable assistant, working through mysteries in an alternate Victorian London full of airships, automatons, monsters, and political pressure. The books mix detective work with gothic adventure, but they keep the partnership at the center.
Then came a different kind of city. Ghosts of Manhattan follows Gabriel Cross, a damaged veteran who becomes the Ghost in a 1920s New York where pulp crime, odd science, and supernatural threats share the streets. The later Ghost novels keep that fast-moving, noir-shaped setup while opening the world beyond one case.
He also writes modern supernatural crime. In the Wychwood books, former London journalist Elspeth Reeves investigates old folklore, buried secrets, and fresh violence in the Oxfordshire countryside. Wychwood and Hallowdene are quieter on the surface than the Newbury books, but they have the same interest in places where history has not stayed buried.
Mann has spent years writing inside some huge fictional worlds. His work includes Doctor Who: Engines of War, set during the Time War, and stories and comics for Star Wars, including Myths & Fables, Dark Legends, Quest for the Hidden City, and The Battle of Jedha. He has also written for Sherlock Holmes, Judge Dredd, Dark Souls, and Warhammer 40,000.
The formats change. The appetite for a strong premise does not.
Readers who like Mann often come for the mix: a mystery with something impossible at its edges, a large genre setting viewed through a small group of people, or an old pulp idea given enough heart to matter. He has said he loves mythology, folklore, Kate Bush, and chocolate, which feels like a fair clue to the shelves around him.
