Chloe Anderson is a physics student who moonlights as Meta-Girl using technology tied to her brilliant professor. Johnny Benvinutti comes out of an Italian crime family, can shoot lightning from his hands, and fronts part of his operation through a coffee shop. Then they fall for each other without realizing they are standing on opposite sides of the same war.

That is a very good engine.

Because of that premise, the books are never only about costumes and fights. They are also about timing, secrecy, guilt, and the weird intimacy of dating someone who keeps vanishing for reasons you cannot ask about. Los Angeles matters here because the city gives the series room for mob politics, street-level crime, shady corporations, and superhero patrols without ever losing the personal scale.

The early volumes keep tightening the knot. Flying Sparks introduces the double-life romance. Flying Sparks Volume 2 throws Chloe into bigger danger as violence spills through the city and Johnny's criminal past pushes harder on the relationship. Flying Sparks Volume 3 adds a weapon built from an alien ruby and a scramble among villains to seize it, which raises both the action and the conspiracy level.

What makes the series feel distinct is how old-school it is in spirit. These are not detached deconstruction comics where everyone hates the genre they are in. The books like melodrama. They like cliffhangers. They like secret identities, bad timing, and characters who could probably solve half their problems if they were honest for five minutes, but obviously cannot be because then the comic would be over.
