Author bio
Kerrelyn Sparks grew up in Houston's Spring Branch area, a native Texan whose early life included a lot of music, language, performance, and reading. Before publishing novels, she worked first as a tap dancer and later as a high school teacher, teaching French and history in Houston.
She came to writing by a winding route.
Like a lot of romance writers, she was a big reader long before she was a published one. What writing gave her was a way to pull several interests into one place: comedy, language, history, and the kind of emotional stakes that keep pages turning. She studied the craft seriously, got involved with writers' groups, entered contests, and eventually made her first sale that way. Her debut novel, For Love or Country, was published in 2002.
Then the vampires arrived.
In 2005, How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire launched the Love at Stake series and opened up the lane readers now know her for best. The setup was a good sign of what was coming: a secret vampire world, a hero with a fang emergency, a heroine in real danger, and a tone that treated paranormal romance as something that could be suspenseful and very funny at the same time. Sparks kept building from there, turning Love at Stake into a long-running ensemble series full of vampires, shifters, synthetic blood, bad puns, wild side plots, and a surprising amount of heart.
Books like The Undead Next Door, Vampire Mine, and Crouching Tiger, Forbidden Vampire show the range inside that world. Some lean harder into romantic comedy. Some bring in heavier backstories, revenge plots, or ongoing battles with dangerous enemies. What ties them together is the feeling that Sparks likes momentum. Her stories move. They flirt, joke, fight, and then move some more. Readers who stay with her usually stay for the banter, the recurring cast, and the way even a very silly premise is anchored by characters who want love, safety, and a place to belong.
The commercial side of that run was strong, too. Every full-length Love at Stake novel reached the USA Today bestseller list, several hit the New York Times list, and the series sold widely enough to be translated into more than a dozen languages. Those are big numbers, but they fit the books. Sparks writes stories that are easy to sink into and easy to pass along.
She did not stay in one corner of romance.
With How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days, she shifted into the fantasy world of Aerthlan, where children born under the embrace of two moons are gifted with strange powers. The later books, including So I Married a Sorcerer, Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon, and When a Princess Proposes, keep her taste for humor and romance but widen the canvas with queens, spies, dragons, elves, and kingdom politics. She also returned to historical romance with The Forbidden Lady and Less Than a Gentleman, both set during the American Revolutionary War and both interested in espionage as much as courtship.
Across all of it, Sparks tends to write capable heroines, protective heroes, strong group dynamics, and villains who give the story a real push. Her books like supernatural setups, but they rarely feel cold or grim. Even when the stakes are high, there is usually room for warmth, teasing, and the sense that love can be both ridiculous and worth fighting for.
She lives in the Greater Houston area of Texas. Her recent author updates say she is currently taking a break from writing, but her backlist already gives a clear picture of what readers return to her for: fast-moving romance, a playful sense of humor, and fantasy worlds that never forget to be entertaining.
