Author bio

Jon Del Arroz is a Bay Area writer who moves easily between novels and comics. He works mostly in science fiction, steampunk, and superhero stories, and his books usually favor speed, pressure, and big choices over slow atmosphere.

He likes putting people in motion.

One of his oldest projects started in a high school English class, where he began sketching an interstellar war story that stayed with him for years. That early idea eventually turned into The Stars Entwined, the opening book in his Aryshan War novels, which he later described as the first book he ever wrote and one he kept rebuilding until it finally matched what he wanted on the page.

Before that novel reached readers, Del Arroz spent time writing fiction and story material for the card game Doomtown: Reloaded. That work helped lead to Star Realms: Rescue Run, his first novel, a tie-in set in the universe of the popular Star Realms game. The book gave him an early foothold in military science fiction and space opera, two lanes he would keep returning to.

Then came For Steam and Country, which introduced Zaira von Monocle and opened his long-running Rislandia adventures. That series mixes airships, war, and fantasy-flavored steampunk, and it became an important part of his catalog. For Steam and Country also won the 2018 CLFA Book of the Year award, while Star Realms: Rescue Run was a Dragon Award finalist.

He did not stop at prose.

Comics have always been part of the picture. Del Arroz ran Flying Sparks as a webcomic and later collected and expanded it in graphic novel form. The series follows a superhero and a mob-connected lightning wielder who fall for each other without realizing they are standing on opposite sides of the fight. He later added comics such as The Cosmic Warrior, showing the same taste for punchy stakes and old-school adventure.

His fiction covers a fair bit of ground. Justified and the rest of the Nano Templar books lean into military science fiction with explicit questions of faith, duty, and liberation. The Immortal Edge moves into imperial intrigue and biological mystery. Even when the settings change, the through line is familiar: leaders under pressure, people trapped inside big systems, and characters who have to act before they fully understand the cost.

That mix is probably the easiest way to describe him. He writes starship wars, steampunk campaigns, superhero drama, and shared-universe projects, but the engine is usually the same. There is a mission, a moral problem, and somebody who cannot stay on the sidelines.

Alongside fiction, he has also published commentary and culture writing, and he has long been associated with the San Francisco Bay Area. For new readers, the good news is simple. You can start with the space opera of The Stars Entwined, the airship adventure of For Steam and Country, the comic-book romance of Flying Sparks, or the hard-running military science fiction of Justified, and you will still get a clear sense of what Del Arroz likes to do: move fast, raise the stakes, and keep his characters making choices that matter.
