Author bio
Emma Robinson has said that reading is like breathing to her, and that feels like the right place to start. Growing up, she loved Little Women so much that she wanted to be Jo, tucked away with a book and an apple. She has also joked that when she didn't have a book at the dinner table, she read the condiment labels instead.
Books came first.
Writing took longer. Robinson wrote an illustrated story about a girl and her dog when she was young, then spent years doing what many future novelists do, carrying half-finished chapters and scraps of ideas through her twenties and thirties while real life got louder. She studied English and European Literature, went into teaching, and kept the dream of publication alive in the background.
The turning point came when she set herself a fortieth birthday challenge: finish a novel. She completed a rough draft of what became The Undercover Mother, put it away for a while, then came back to it with fresh eyes. After getting helpful feedback and taking an online self-editing course, she sent the manuscript out again. Bookouture picked it up, and her debut arrived in 2018.
For a long time, Robinson balanced writing with teaching English, including A-level classes. That job matters in her story because it shows how hard won her writing career was, built around marking, deadlines, and family routines. She has said that sharing those first publishing milestones with her students was one of the sweetest parts of the early years.
Her first novels lean into humor, friendship, and the messy shock of family life changing shape. The Undercover Mother, Happily Never After, and One Way Ticket to Paris all mix comedy with real pressure, whether that is pregnancy, single parenthood, or the quiet feeling of losing sight of yourself inside domestic life. She also wrote parenting pieces on her Motherhood for Slackers blog, where the tone was warm, funny, and very honest about the chaos of raising children.
Then the books got heavier.
That shift led to the Emma Robinson many readers now know best. In novels like My Silent Daughter, My Husband's Daughter, His First Wife's Secret, and To Be a Mother, she takes ordinary women and puts them in impossible emotional corners. The questions are simple to ask and hard to answer: what would you do for your child, what can a marriage survive, and how much can love carry when grief, guilt, or secrecy walks into the room?
Even when the premises are high stakes, Robinson's fiction keeps circling back to the same human things. Mothers who are trying their best. Women friends who show up when life falls apart. Families built by blood, marriage, choice, and sheer stubbornness. Readers who love her books tend to respond to that mix of a big emotional hook and characters who feel lived in.
One book changed her own life in a very direct way. My Husband's Daughter became a major breakthrough and helped her move from juggling two careers to writing full time. In July 2023, after twenty years in teaching, she left the classroom behind.
She now lives in Essex with her husband, two children, and a small black dog. The domestic details still matter to her work, and so do the bigger feelings. That combination, family life as it is, not as anyone pretends it should be, is what gives her novels their pull.
