Author bio

Ed Robinson did not come to fiction through a writing program or a big publishing machine. He came to it through work, travel, and a hard left turn in middle age. Born in Smyrna, Delaware, on September 2, 1962, he worked as a reporter and editor for the weekly The Smyrna Times and also contributed to The Mariner Magazine, a boating and fishing publication. Long before he was writing Meade Breeze novels, he was already paying close attention to the kinds of places and people that would later fill them.

Then he made the kind of move that sounds a little like one of his own books. After about two decades in the utility business, Robinson and his wife, Kim, quit their jobs in 2010 and moved onto a 36-foot trawler called Leap of Faith. They had been living in the Delmarva area. Suddenly they were building a very different life, cruising through southern Florida and the Bahamas and learning, day by day, what freedom on the water really costs.

He did not waste that experience.

His first books were nonfiction. Leap of Faith tells the story of how he and Kim downsized, got rid of debt, and chose a simpler life afloat. Poop, Booze, and Bikinis leans into the comic side of that world, the awkward chores, the dockside weirdness, and the small disasters that glossy cruising fantasies tend to leave out. The Untold Story of Kim is more personal and much more serious, focusing on Kim's struggle with chronic pain and the couple's fight with the medical and legal systems around it.

Those early books gave him two useful things, readers and confidence. Robinson later said he more or less taught himself as he went, and the success of the nonfiction pushed him toward fiction. That is where Meade Breeze arrived, first in Confessions of a Boat Bum and then across a long run of adventures that includes Following Breeze, Free Breeze, Bahama Breeze, Banner Elk Breeze, Coastal Breeze, and many more.

He knew solitude well.

That matters because Breeze is not a slick action hero. He is a widower, a drifter, a boat bum, and a man who spends a lot of time in his own head. Robinson once described himself as an introvert who had spent days, weeks, and even months isolated on a boat, and that feeling shows up all through the Breeze books. Readers tend to come for the boating action, the Florida backwaters, the Bahamas, and the mountain settings, but many stay for the oddball side characters and for Breeze himself, who can be funny, reckless, moody, loyal, and very hard on himself.

Robinson's writing habits were steady and practical. He said he wrote almost every day, usually around 28 days a month, and could finish a novel in about two months, revisions included. He was not much for outlines. He preferred to begin with a simple notion and see where it led. That loose, lived-in energy fits his books. They move like long trips, with room for weather, detours, jokes, quiet stretches, and sudden trouble.

Life kept changing, and his books changed with it. After years on the boat, Robinson and Kim spent time in a log cabin in the North Carolina mountains, then moved to the Crystal Coast near Swansboro. He died on November 22, 2020, in Hubert, North Carolina, at 58. His books still feel close to the life he built, full of salt air, rough edges, stubborn people, and the strong pull of trying to live on your own terms.
