Author bio
Emma Davies writes contemporary romance, women's fiction and cosy mysteries about people trying to make a fresh start. Her stories often begin when life has gone off course, then make room for friendship, family, small communities and the possibility of love.
Her first published novel was Letting In Light, which introduced the village of Rowan Hill in 2014. It follows Ellie Hesketh as she leaves a painful break-up behind and finds herself drawn into the lives of a guarded neighbour and his family. The book set a pattern that appears throughout Davies's work: ordinary people carry old hurts, then slowly find the confidence to face them.
Davies has described herself as a mother of three who worked as a finance manager by day and wrote at night. Before that, she worked in a design studio. Her route into fiction was not a dramatic escape from one life into another. It was writing fitted around a full, busy life.
That practical, lived-in feeling shows up in her books.
In Lucy's Little Village Book Club, a young woman takes over a small village library and tries to help the members of her new book club, sometimes a little too eagerly. The Little Cottage novels head to Joy's Acre, where visitors arrive carrying worries of their own and find a welcoming country retreat, good food and people prepared to lend a hand.
Davies also writes family dramas with a sharper edge. My Husband's Lie, The Wife's Choice, After the Crash and The Little Island Secret all put secrets from the past under pressure. A homecoming, a chance encounter or a message from a stranger can change what a character believes about their family and themselves.
Then there are the mysteries. The Adam and Eve books pair caterer Francesca Eve with young tech-minded Adam Smith. Their cases take place around country houses, dinner parties, funerals and baking competitions, so the danger usually arrives alongside a complicated menu. In the Summer & Wynter story, two very different women are brought together by the puzzles inside an old house.
Her newer novels keep returning to second chances. The Midnight Bakery, also published as Frankie Nightingale Begins Again, brings strangers together after dark in a small bakery. One December Morning follows a chance Christmas meeting between two people who have both learned to live with loneliness.
Hope matters in an Emma Davies book, but it is usually earned. Her characters have to talk honestly, ask for help and decide what kind of life they want next. That makes her novels a good fit for readers who enjoy emotional stories with warm settings, a little mystery and room for people to begin again.
