Series background & context
The Adam and Eve Mystery series puts food at the center of a run of modern cosy crimes. Its amateur sleuth is Francesca Eve, usually called Fran, a capable caterer who would much rather be preparing a good meal than explaining a murder scene to the police.
Unfortunately, trouble has a habit of arriving with the guests.
Fran is joined by Adam Smith, a younger friend with a quick mind and a talent for technology. Their friendship is one of the series' anchors. Fran is practical, observant and used to taking charge in a kitchen. Adam brings a different way of looking at the clues, and the two gradually become a dependable team when official investigations do not seem to have all the answers.
The first book, Death by Candlelight, begins with a murder mystery party in a Shropshire manor house. When the staged crime is followed by a real poisoning, Fran has to protect both her reputation and the people caught up in the evening. From there, the books keep the country-house tradition but give it a food-focused twist. A demanding dinner party, a funeral supper with an inheritance puzzle, and a Christmas baking competition all become scenes of very real danger.
The settings are a big part of the appeal. These are places with old grievances, family rivalries, wealthy hosts and guests who have plenty to hide. Fran gets access to the small details because she is there to cater, often moving between the kitchen, dining room and back corridors while everyone else assumes she is too busy to notice what is going on.
The crimes have real stakes, but the tone stays approachable rather than bleak. There are elaborate clues, suspicious households, food disasters and moments of humour alongside the investigations. Readers can expect a classic whodunnit structure, with a closed group of suspects and a case that grows more complicated as Fran and Adam uncover the connections between them.
Each novel has its own complete mystery. Still, starting with Death by Candlelight is the best choice because it introduces Fran, Adam and the reason they become involved in these cases. Reading in order also lets their partnership develop naturally.
Come for the catering. Stay for the clues.
