Series background & context

The Rowan Hill series is about a rural place that gives people room to recover, although it never promises that recovery will be easy. The two novels are linked by Rowan Hill itself, a close-knit English community where newcomers arrive carrying heartbreak, uncertainty and secrets they are not ready to share.

Letting In Light introduces Ellie Hesketh after a painful break-up and a car accident have left her unsure of herself. She comes to Rowan Hill looking for quiet and a chance to work out what comes next. Instead, she finds a neighbour she already knows in an unexpected way. Will McKenna, the man who once helped her after the accident, is private, moody and dealing with wounds of his own.

Their relationship is not a quick fix. Ellie and Will are both trying to rebuild confidence after difficult experiences, and the wider Rowan Hill community has its own history and tensions. Will's brother Finn also returns, which brings old problems close to the surface. The story balances romance with questions of forgiveness, loyalty and whether people can learn to trust one another again.

Rowan Hill is a refuge, but it asks people to be honest.

In Turn Towards The Sun, the focus widens through Lizzie, a young woman who takes a job at Rowan Hill and sees it as a chance to leave her old life behind. By this point Ellie and Will have helped make the place more welcoming, but peace proves fragile. Strange incidents begin to unsettle the community, and the evidence seems to point at Lizzie just as she starts to feel that she might belong there.

The series has the feel of contemporary women's fiction with a strong romantic thread. Its countryside setting offers beauty and calm, but it is not an escape from consequences. People have to face past choices, difficult family ties and the ways gossip or suspicion can damage a new beginning. The books also make space for practical projects, shared meals and the small acts of kindness that turn a house or village into a home.

Start with Letting In Light. It introduces Ellie, Will, Finn and the emotional foundations of Rowan Hill. Then continue with Turn Towards The Sun to see the community from a newer resident's point of view.

At its heart, Rowan Hill is a series about people learning that a fresh start is something they can build together.
