The Little Cottage series is set around Joy's Acre, a worn-down country farm that becomes a place of refuge for people who need to rethink their lives. In Summer at the Little Cottage on the Hill, violinist Isobel needs a secluded place to prepare for a chance to repair her career, but the past follows her. Return to the Little Cottage on the Hill follows Megan, who comes home for a blacksmithing competition while doubts about her work and relationship mount. Christmas at the Little Cottage on the Hill brings Ruby and her children to a cottage after she leaves an abusive husband, just as winter weather closes in.

The series has a warm, communal tone, but the characters' problems are taken seriously. There are secrets, grief, confidence knocked by bad relationships, money concerns and the fear of starting over. The support of the people around Joy's Acre matters because it gives each newcomer room to make choices without having to face every difficulty alone.

Food, gardens, crafts and the changing countryside help make the setting feel lived in. The stories work individually, but reading in order gives the strongest sense of Joy's Acre growing from a risky renovation into a much-loved haven, and of the original cast finding their own footing.
