Author bio
Ellen Riggs writes the kind of mysteries she loves to read: funny, gentle stories where animals are at the heart of every case and the crime never overshadows the comfort.
She grew up obsessed with both pets and paperbacks, and for a long time she thought veterinary school would be her path. A teenage crush on country vet author James Herriot even sent her across the ocean to tour his English hometown. Somewhere along the way, though, she realized it was his storytelling that had really captured her.
Math and science were never her favorite subjects, and that turned out to be a useful clue. Instead of memorizing formulas, she leaned into words. She earned degrees in English literature and journalism in Toronto, learning how to chase down details, build a scene and keep readers turning pages.
Before she ever invented a hobby farm in fiction, she spent years writing in other corners of publishing, including collaborations and romantic comedies. No matter the project, animals kept sneaking into the stories, from scruffy rescues to dignified house pets who quietly stole the show.
Those threads come together in her Bought-the-Farm mysteries, which follow burned out HR executive Ivy Galloway and her brilliant border collie, Keats. Starting with the prequel A Dog with Two Tales and the first full novel Dogcatcher in the Rye, the series drops Ivy back in her hometown of Clover Grove, where a run down hobby farm, an inn full of quirky guests and a steady stream of rescue animals give her a new life and a lot of murder cases to untangle.
Books like Dark Side of the Moo, A Streak of Bad Cluck and Twas the Bite Before Christmas mix small town troubles, family chaos and a growing menagerie of dogs, cats, goats, pigs and more. Ivy leans on her corporate interviewing skills while Keats uses his working dog brain, and together they tackle mysteries that threaten their farm, their town and their very large extended family.
When she wants to tilt a little further into the supernatural, Riggs turns to the Mystic Mutt Mysteries. In that series, reluctant psychic Janelle Brighton and her saucy ghost dachshund, Mr. Bixby, deal with magical crimes in the town of Wyldwood Springs. Stories such as I Want You to Haunt Me, You Can't Always Get What You Haunt and Any Way You Haunt It keep the same light tone and animal focus, just with extra ghosts, spells and family curses.
She also co-created the Dog Town books, romantic, low body count capers set in the ultra dog friendly community of Dorset Hills. Titles like Bitter and Sweet in Dog Town and A Match Made in Dog Town follow different couples and their dogs as they fall in love, battle city hall and rely on a grassroots network of rescuers.
Riggs lives in Toronto, Canada, where real life is much less dramatic than her fictional towns but just as pet focused. She shares her days with a couple of energetic dogs and a cat who prefers to supervise from a distance. Weekends often take her to a family cottage by a northern lake, where she hikes rocky trails, tries not to trip over roots and keeps her dogs from sampling anything too questionable along the way.
That tiny cedar lined cabin at the lake doubles as a writing nook. There, far from traffic noise but very close to muddy pawprints, she builds new mysteries, plans more animal rescues on the page and dreams about the hobby farm she might one day own in real life.
