Series background & context
Edge of Collapse begins with a familiar modern world that fails in an instant. A devastating EMP attack destroys the U.S. power grid in the dead of winter, knocking out vehicles, phones, and basic services. Cars stall on highways, planes fall from the sky, and small towns like Fall Creek, Michigan, are left to fend for themselves in subzero temperatures.
Winter itself becomes one of the main villains.
The prequel novella Chaos Rising drops readers into downtown Chicago on Christmas Eve, where former soldier Liam Coleman is visiting his twin brother and pregnant sister-in-law when the lights go out. Within minutes, traffic gridlocks, aircraft plummet, and Liam realizes this is far more than a local outage. That narrow slice of time sets up the larger catastrophe the novels explore.
In Edge of Collapse, the first full novel, the blackout becomes the one miracle Hannah Sheridan never expected. After five years locked in an underground cell by serial predator Gavin Pike, the EMP unlocks the electronic door and gives her a single chance to run. Battered but determined, she joins forces with Liam, and together they attempt a two-hundred-mile trek across frozen Michigan toward what they hope will be safety.
Back in Fall Creek, Hannah's husband Noah, a small-town deputy, is fighting for survival on a different front. Stranded on a ski lift with his young son Milo when the grid fails, he has to get them down before a blizzard hits. As days stretch into weeks, Noah and the town grapple with empty store shelves, failing generators, and neighbors who don't all agree on how far they're willing to go to stay alive.
Across Edge of Madness, Edge of Darkness, and Edge of Anarchy, the series widens from personal escape story to community saga. The people of Fall Creek battle brutal cold, hunger, and the slow erosion of law. Militia groups rise, churches fracture, and the same instincts that kept everyone alive begin to pull the town apart. Hannah and Liam's journey collides with Noah's as family secrets surface and Pike's obsession grows more dangerous.
Later volumes, from Edge of Defiance through Edge of Survival and Edge of Valor, push the survivors to a final reckoning over what kind of future they're willing to fight for. Winter slowly loosens its grip, but new enemies and old grievances threaten the fragile order they've built. Through it all, the series focuses less on gadgets and more on ordinary people—parents, veterans, kids—forced to confront who they are when the lights never come back on.
