Series background & context

The Coming Collapse series follows a shared near-future timeline in which a global financial crisis, nicknamed “the Crunch,” shatters the United States and destabilizes the wider world. Rather than one straight-line saga, the books read like overlapping windows into the same disaster. Each volume focuses on different characters, regions, and kinds of preparation, so you see the collapse from Idaho back roads, New Mexico ranches, military bases, and eventually from as far away as Australia and western Canada.

Patriots is the anchor point for the whole sequence. It centers on a circle of friends who have spent years quietly preparing a survival retreat near Bovill, Idaho. When hyperinflation, market free-fall, and urban riots hit, they must fight their way out of the Chicago area and across a disintegrating country to reach that ranch. The story mixes firefights, roadblocks, and small-unit tactics with nuts-and-bolts detail on food storage, radios, vehicles, and retreat security.

Survivors steps sideways in time rather than forward. It opens with the same economic breaking point but follows new people: Army officer Andrew Laine trying to get home from Afghanistan, an Air Force family divided between Arizona and the Northeast, and three teenage brothers suddenly on their own. Much of the action takes place in the Four Corners region, giving a ground-level view of how rural communities, criminal gangs, and makeshift authorities respond as money and public services fail.

In Founders, the series widens again. We see Captain Laine embedded inside the Provisional Government’s New Army at Fort Knox, even as a grassroots War of Resistance builds around him. At the same time Ken and Terry Layton, a young couple from Chicago, are forced into a hard choice between hanging on in a failing city or heading west toward their long-planned retreat. The novel leans into questions of loyalty, conscience, and what it means to oppose an illegitimate regime.

Expatriates and Liberators push the consequences of the Crunch beyond U.S. borders. Expatriates tracks American missionaries and a Texas petroleum engineer caught up in a newly aggressive Indonesian government’s drive across Southeast Asia and toward northern Australia, while relatives back in Florida face looting and power outages at home. Liberators shifts north, following Afghanistan veteran Ray McGregor and intelligence officer Phil Adams as they link up with family in Bella Coola, British Columbia, and join a resistance movement against an occupying force.

Across all five books, readers can expect a blend of fast-paced survival adventure and dense practical information. Rawles devotes page space to topics like retreat architecture, communications gear, barter items, and medical preps, all filtered through characters who are outspoken about Christian faith and constitutional government. You can read the novels in publication order, starting with Patriots, or dip in anywhere and treat each book as a parallel story set during the same cascading collapse.
