Author bio

Kyla Stone grew up in Michigan, far from the EMP blasts, pandemics, and nuclear strikes that fill her novels today. As a kid she was the one scribbling stories in notebooks and staying up too late with a flashlight and a book, already drawn to tales about survival and second chances.

She started writing fiction when she was about five, long before she knew the term post-apocalyptic. Over the years she wrote her way through school, jobs, and cross-country moves, treating the blank page as the one place she could sort out big emotions and hard questions.

Like a lot of writers, she hit pause when her children were young. The stories never really stopped, but they lived in notebooks and half-finished documents while life revolved around diapers, playgrounds, and school pickups. When her youngest went back to school, she made a quiet promise to take writing seriously again.

That promise led to Beneath The Skin, her 2016 debut, a gritty young adult novel about a girl coping with abuse, self-harm, and friendship. A companion book, Before You Break, follows two sisters haunted by a shared tragedy and trying to decide whether the truth will heal them or break them all over again.

From there Stone's work tilted steadily toward speculative fiction. With the near-future Last Sanctuary novels, she imagined a world unraveling under famine and a bio-engineered virus, tracing the fallout from a hijacked cruise ship all the way to fortified enclaves and lonely wildlife refuges in the woods.

Her later series pushed those ideas farther. Edge of Collapse drops an electromagnetic pulse on the American Midwest and follows characters like captive-turned-survivor Hannah Sheridan, reclusive veteran Liam Coleman, and small-town deputy Noah Sheridan as they try to rebuild something humane in a frozen, lawless Michigan. Nuclear Dawn centers on Dakota Sloane and Logan Garcia as nuclear bombs level U.S. cities, while Lost Light sends solar flares crashing into the grid and strands Shiloh Easton, her aunt Lena, undersheriff Jackson Cross, and ex-Ranger Eli Pope in a darkened Upper Peninsula. The Edge of Collapse books have even been optioned for television development.

Across all of these worlds, she keeps coming back to the same questions: what happens to ordinary people when the rules disappear, and how do they carry their fear, guilt, and hope forward anyway? It's no accident that some of her favorite reads include The Road, The Passage, The Hunger Games, and Ready Player One, or that she re-watches movies like The Lord of the Rings and Gladiator when she wants to refill the creative well.

Big disasters are the backdrop; the people are always the point.

She doesn't write to preach or to predict the future; she writes to make readers feel something.

Stone has said that books changed her life, and she hopes her stories help people see themselves, the world around them, and the people they love a little more clearly. That might mean spending a few hundred pages in the head of a traumatized teenager, or standing beside a parent deciding whether to risk everything for their child.

Outside the pages, she leans into the same mix of intensity and comfort. She enjoys time at the shooting range with her Springfield XDS, browsing new gear for her bug-out bag, hiking to waterfalls in the Smoky Mountains, traveling to far-flung places, and even jumping out of planes—with a parachute firmly attached. On quieter days she's just as happy in pajamas with coffee, dark chocolate, a board game, and a good novel.

These days she makes her home in northern Georgia, near Atlanta, where she lives with her family and three very spoiled cats. From there, she keeps dreaming up new end-of-the-world scenarios and the flawed, stubbornly hopeful people who survive them.
