Series background & context
At the center of the Trawler Trash series is Meade Edwin Breeze, a widower, drifter, and small-time outlaw who lives aboard his trawler, Leap of Faith. When the story opens in Confessions of a Boat Bum, he is already trying to outrun grief, bad decisions, and the law. He survives on nerve, charm, and whatever work or hustle keeps fuel in the tank. That setup gives the whole series its scruffy, offbeat energy from the start.
Breeze is not a neat hero. He can be stubborn, funny, reckless, suspicious, and unexpectedly thoughtful, sometimes all in the same chapter. He knows boats, hidden anchorages, and how to disappear when he needs to. He also has a habit of stepping into trouble when common sense says he should keep moving. That push and pull gives the books their personality. Breeze wants freedom, but he also keeps getting tangled up in other people's pain.
Trouble always finds him.
Across books like Following Breeze, Free Breeze, Redeeming Breeze, and Cool Breeze, the series moves through the Gulf Coast islands, the Florida Keys, the Everglades, and the Bahamas. Breeze tangles with crooks, smugglers, treasure hunters, corrupt officials, and people who badly underestimate him. He falls into risky relationships, helps strangers he probably should avoid, and turns more than one ordinary day on the water into a full disaster.
The setting matters a lot here. These books are soaked in marinas, channels, beaches, weather, and the practical reality of moving by boat. Florida is not just scenery in this series. It shapes every choice Breeze makes, where he can hide, where he can run, and what kind of danger can reach him. The same goes for the Bahamas and the other coastal stops along the way. A trip is never just a trip. It is also tide, fuel, distance, storms, law enforcement, and whatever bad idea is waiting at the next dock.
Later books like Ominous Breeze, Restless Breeze, Enduring Breeze, and Benevolent Breeze lean even harder into Breeze's inner life. He starts as a man pulled apart by loss, and even when he looks relaxed, he is usually carrying guilt, anger, or a fresh mess of his own making. That emotional thread is what keeps the series from feeling like a simple run of boat thrillers. Breeze is always trying to decide whether he can change, whether he even wants to, and how much of his old life he can really leave behind.
If you like coastal adventure fiction with salt air, crooked deals, oddball side characters, and a lead who is often his own biggest problem, Trawler Trash is the place to begin.
