Author bio
Deborah Blake writes the kind of books that make magic feel lived in. Her work moves easily between practical nonfiction about modern witchcraft and fiction full of witches, folklore, romance, and very opinionated animals.
That mix came naturally. She built her early career with approachable books on modern witchcraft, the kind that speak to readers with busy lives, small budgets, and a real desire to make spiritual practice part of the everyday. Later, she leaned further into fiction, but she never really left that practical streak behind. Even her fantasy novels tend to feel grounded in chores, friendships, awkward timing, and the stubborn fact that magic does not stop life from being messy.
Fiction kept knocking.
Her first novel, Witch Ever Way You Can, spent years on the contest and query circuit before finally reaching readers. It won the EMILY Best of the Best award, and Blake has spoken openly about how hard those early publishing years could be. That honesty shows up all through her career. She has never sounded like someone trying to sell a glamorous writer myth. She sounds like someone who kept going.
A few books later, readers got series like Wickedly Dangerous, which reworks Baba Yaga folklore into modern paranormal romance, and Veiled Magic, which imagines witches working openly in a world where the dead can still give police statements. Then came the Broken Riders books, tied to the Baba Yaga world, and the Catskills Pet Rescue mysteries, starting with Furbidden Fatality, where a lottery winner, a struggling animal sanctuary, and a murder all collide in upstate New York.
Her nonfiction has its own steady following. Books like Everyday Witchcraft, A Year and a Day of Everyday Witchcraft, The Little Book of Cat Magic, and The Eclectic Witch's Book of Shadows are written for readers who want guidance without a lot of pomp. Blake's voice is friendly, practical, and lightly funny. She explains ritual, spellwork, and devotional practice in a way that feels usable instead of intimidating. Her tarot and oracle work follows the same pattern, especially the Everyday Witch Tarot and Everyday Witch Oracle.
Cats show up a lot.
So do a few themes that tie the whole bibliography together. Blake likes capable women who are still figuring things out. She likes found family, the pull between duty and desire, and the idea that everyday life can hold real enchantment if you pay attention. In both the fiction and the nonfiction, there is a recurring sense that magic belongs in kitchens, gardens, old houses, road trips, rescue shelters, and ordinary relationships, not just in grand ceremonies.
Outside the page, Blake has worn a lot of hats. She has written an ongoing column for Witches & Pagans magazine, run The Artisans' Guild, a cooperative shop she founded with a friend in 1999, and worked as a jewelry maker, tarot reader, and energy healer. She lives in a very old farmhouse in rural upstate New York with numerous supervising cats, which feels exactly right for someone whose books so often make room for both the magical and the mundane.
