Deborah Blake's Baba Yaga series takes the old Russian folklore figure and gives her a fresh, modern shape. In these books, Baba Yaga is not one scary old woman in a hut on chicken legs. The companions matter too. One of the series' most memorable touches is the Chudo Yudo creatures, dragons transformed into dogs or cats who travel with the Baba Yagas and act as guardians, friends, and occasional comic relief. They make the world stranger, warmer, and more fun without undercutting the stakes.

These books sit in the space between paranormal romance and urban fantasy. Each novel has danger, magic, and a strong romantic thread, but the broader series is really about duty, loneliness, trust, and what it means to protect a world that does not know you are there.
