Veiled Magic Books in Order

The Veiled Magic series is Deborah Blake's take on urban fantasy with a police procedural streak. It begins with a simple but very fun premise, witches have already come out of the broom closet, and they work openly beside humans in regular modern jobs.

That means the magic here is public, but it is still complicated.

The series follows Donata Santori, a witch and police officer whose specialty makes her stand out even in a magical world. She is a Ghost Yanker, someone who can summon the spectral forms of the recently dead and question them. In theory, that should make murder investigations easier. In practice, it mostly means Donata gets dragged into stranger, riskier cases that put her in the path of magical objects, hidden motives, and people who want power badly enough to kill for it.

Donata is a good lead for this kind of story because she works on two levels at once. She is a cop doing a job, which gives the books structure and momentum. But she is also a witch trying to understand her own abilities, her family history, and the increasingly tangled supernatural world around her. Her cases pull in both the mundane and the paranormal, so the books can shift smoothly from interviews and clues to dragons, shapechangers, haunted art, and old magic that refuses to stay buried.

The supporting cast adds even more texture. Donata's relationships with figures like the half-Dragon art forger Peter Casaventi and the shapechanger Magnus Torvald give the series part of its romantic and emotional push. These are not stories where a single love interest neatly solves everything. Instead, Blake lets attraction, mistrust, loyalty, and danger overlap in ways that suit the world.

There is also an ongoing thread running beneath the individual mysteries. Certain relics, family secrets, and long-hidden histories keep resurfacing, which makes the series feel connected instead of purely episodic. Donata grows more aware of how much is at stake, not just for her, but for both the human and paranormal communities around her.

The tone lands in a nice middle ground. Veiled Magic is not as cozy as Blake's pet rescue mysteries, and it is a bit more street-level than the Baba Yaga books. But it still has room for wit, character banter, and small human moments amid the danger. If you like urban fantasy that treats magic as part of the fabric of everyday life, while still giving you murder cases, supernatural politics, and a capable heroine at the center, this series is built for that kind of reading.
