Star Stone Books in Order

The Star Stone stories are an early look at Deborah Blake's fictional world, and they already show many of the things she does well, modern witches, humor, romance, and magic that creates as many problems as it solves.

The central premise is simple and sticky. Deirdre Connelly, a practicing witch, ends up tied to the Star Stone, an ancient crystal with serious power attached to it. Suddenly she is dealing with danger she did not ask for, people who want the stone for themselves, and a life that has become much stranger than she expected.

That would be enough trouble on its own.

Blake adds two key elements that give the series its flavor. One is romance, especially through Deirdre's connection with actor Robert Daniel Addison. The other is the sense that magic is not abstract or distant. It is personal, awkward, occasionally funny, and very capable of wrecking an ordinary day. There is also a mysterious spiritual guide in the mix, plus the threat of powerful people chasing the Star Stone for their own ends.

The tone is lighter than some of Blake's later series, but the stakes are real. Deirdre is not just learning how to survive a magical mess. She is also learning how much courage it takes to trust her own abilities when events start moving faster than she can plan for. That combination gives the books a cheerful paranormal romance energy while still letting the danger matter.

The follow-up story, Witch Upon a Star, stays with Deirdre and Rob and narrows the focus in a good way. Instead of building the world outward, it lets readers spend more time with the relationship and with the consequences of carrying magic into everyday life. Even environmental trouble, like a mysteriously failing wetlands area, becomes part of the emotional and magical stakes.

Because the series is small, it reads quickly, but it still feels like a complete little corner of Blake's body of work. You can see her interest in modern witchcraft, in women who are stronger than they first think, and in stories where love and magic are both useful and inconvenient. If you want one of her earlier fictional projects, with a more compact setup and a strong paranormal romance core, Star Stone is a good place to visit.
