Dana McIntyre Must Die is one of the punchiest series in the Descentverse. It throws you into a version of Las Vegas where vampires are a civic problem, the future feels a little ruined around the edges, and the main character has already spent a long time solving things with violence. Dana is a slayer, not a detective in the polished sense, and that attitude shapes everything.

The opening book, Drawing Dead, gives her the worst possible complication. She has been bitten by a master vampire and infected with venom. Dana would rather die than turn, which means the series runs on two pressures at once: she still wants to keep Vegas safe, and she is racing her own transformation.

That is a brutal setup.

The wild card is Nissa Royal, a vampire Dana should not trust and cannot quite avoid. Their uneasy alliance gives the books a lot of life. Dana is blunt, furious, and built for confrontation. Nissa brings danger of a different kind. Together they push the series away from simple monster hunting and into something more tangled, where a cure, survival, and the future of the city are all caught up together.

The Vegas setting helps too. The book titles are full of card-table language for a reason. Reine plays up the sense of gambling, bad odds, and people making reckless moves because there is no safe move left. It suits Dana perfectly.

If you like hard-hitting urban fantasy with blood, momentum, and a heroine who meets horror by kicking the door in, this series delivers. It is one of Reine's grittier branches, but it also knows how to keep the action moving.
