Preternatural Affairs Books in Order

Preternatural Affairs is SM Reine doing supernatural crime fiction with a sharp sense of humor and a lot of bureaucracy. The main character is Cèsar Hawke, a witch who works for the Office of Preternatural Affairs, which means he deals with magical law, dangerous suspects, and a steady stream of cases that are never as straightforward as they should be.

The opening book, Witch Hunt, throws him straight into chaos. He wakes up with a dead woman in his bathtub, the police think he is guilty, and the best shot at clearing his name involves tracking down Isobel Stonecrow, a necrocognitive witch who can talk to the dead and is already in trouble with the OPA. That mix of murder mystery, magical procedure, and bad decisions is basically the series in miniature.

Cèsar is the reason it works.

He is funny, unreliable in a very human way, often in over his head, and surrounded by people who are stronger, stranger, or scarier than he is. Isobel, Suzy, and director Fritz Friederling all help shape the books into more than just case-of-the-week adventures. Their alliances are messy, personal, and always carrying extra baggage.

As the series moves through Silver Bullet, Hotter Than Helltown, Shadow Burns, and beyond, the cases get uglier and the stakes get larger. Los Angeles, Reno, Hell-linked politics, cults, demonic murders, and internal OPA rot all start to overlap. The result is a branch of the Descentverse that feels more procedural than the others, but never dry.

There is a lot of action, but there is also a lot of paperwork, hierarchy, and magical office tension, which gives the books their own personality. Reine clearly enjoys the idea that the old battles between Heaven and Hell might now involve warrants, departments, and professional jealousy.

If you want a male lead, supernatural mysteries, and a series that mixes grim cases with sarcasm and found-family complications, Preternatural Affairs is one of Reine's most inviting entries.
