Descent Books in Order

The Descent books are where the larger Descentverse really begins to take shape. At the center is Elise Kavanagh, a former demon hunter and exorcist who once helped police the line between Heaven, Hell, and Earth. By the time Death's Hand opens, she wants out. She has a normal job, a quieter life, and every intention of leaving the bloodier parts of her past behind.

That plan does not last long.

Elise is pulled back into supernatural violence by cases that refuse to stay small, and by James Faulkner, the powerful witch who used to be her partner. Their relationship is one of the things that gives the series its pull. They know each other too well, trust each other badly, and still end up tied together whenever the world gets worse. Reine uses that history to keep the books emotional even when the plot is dealing with demons, rogue hunters, ancient treaties, or gods.

The setting is urban fantasy, but the scale keeps growing. Early books like Death's Hand and The Darkest Gate feel like gritty supernatural investigations. By the time you get deeper into Damnation Marked, Dire Blood, Defying Fate, and Paradise Damned, the story is wrestling with Hell, Heaven, prophecy, identity, and what it means for a human being to keep paying the price for power.

These books are darker than a lot of paranormal fantasy. They are violent, heavy on consequences, and not interested in making the supernatural look glamorous. Even so, the real hook is character. Elise is stubborn, battered, angry, loyal, and very often outmatched, which makes her easy to root for even when the world around her gets huge.
