Series background & context

The Cloverdale books zoom in on one small Indiana town trying to endure the same nuclear-driven EMP event that shatters the Dark Road world. Instead of a former Ranger, the focus here is Vince Walker, an ordinary dad who happens to be picking up his son Cy at the Indianapolis airport when the attacks hit.

In the first novel, Impact, Vince and Cy have to claw their way out of a burning, panicked city with almost no warning and no working infrastructure. The highways are jammed, emergency services are overwhelmed or gone, and every choice—stay, run, help, hide—carries a real cost. Their goal is simple and brutally hard: get back to their hometown of Cloverdale and find out who, if anyone, is still alive.

Once they reach what’s left of Cloverdale, the series shifts gears from pure flight to the grind of staying put. Power, water and communications are gone. Fires and EMP surges have gutted much of the town, leaving a patchwork of intact farmsteads, half-ruined houses and frightened neighbors trying to decide whether they’ll function as a community or retreat behind locked doors.

Across Survival, Endurance and Confrontation, Vince and a core group of townspeople struggle to rebuild something like normal life while dealing with a roving gang of looters that sees Cloverdale as an easy target. Miller spends a lot of time on the everyday problems—food, medical care, shelter, who stands watch—alongside the higher-stakes confrontations over land, weapons and leadership.

Cloverdale is less about road-trip adventure and more about what happens when you stay and try to defend one patch of ground. The cast includes older residents, families with kids, and people who were never “preppers” but now have to learn skills fast or become a burden. Trust is hard-won, and missteps can get someone killed.

You don’t have to read Dark Road first to follow this series; Cloverdale stands on its own as a small-town survival tale. But if you enjoy stories where the drama comes from neighbors figuring out how to live together when the rulebook has burned, this corner of Miller’s universe delivers that in a focused, character-driven way.
