Series background & context

Dark Waters takes Bruno Miller’s EMP apocalypse off the highways and out onto the ocean. The series centers on Spencer Hayes, his girlfriend Kate and their dog Finn, who are living aboard a 31-foot sailboat in the Florida Keys when the nuclear strikes fry the grid along the eastern seaboard.

In Zero Hour, Spencer is anchored near the laid-back town of Marathon, enjoying a simple live-aboard routine, while Kate is away visiting her parents up the coast in Stuart. When the blasts hit and everything electronic dies, his world shrinks to his boat, his neighbors at the marina and the realization that Kate is now hundreds of miles away with no working phones, vehicles or emergency services between them.

What follows is a blend of coastal survival and blue-water adventure. Spencer’s prior military experience gives him a strong urge to stay and help the local community as it spirals into chaos—fires, looting, panicked tourists and residents all trapped at the end of a chain of bridges. At the same time, his promise to Kate and his attachment to Finn keep pulling him toward the open water and the long, risky trip north.

Over Dead Calm and Dead Reckoning, Spencer gathers a small crew and pushes farther from the safety of known harbors. The series leans into the specific problems of life at sea in a dead grid: fuel that can’t be replaced, navigation without electronics, storms that can’t be tracked, and other vessels whose intentions you can’t read until it’s almost too late.

Savage Shores brings the crew back to land, only to find that the coastline may be even more dangerous than the ocean. Law and order have largely collapsed around places like Stuart, and the tight little boat family has to adapt again, trading long watches on deck for tense runs through ruined neighborhoods where everyone is armed and afraid.

Compared to Dark Road’s long highway march, Dark Waters feels more contained and claustrophobic, even when the characters are surrounded by empty horizon. It’s ideal if you like survival stories with boats, harbors and islands at their core, or if you’re curious how Miller’s practical, grounded style plays out on the water instead of the interstate.
