Series background & context

The Dark Road series is where Bruno Miller’s post-apocalyptic universe really starts. It opens with former Army Ranger Ben Davis camping deep in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains with his teenage son Joel and their dog, Gunner, when nuclear-triggered EMP blasts wipe out the grid in a matter of minutes.

From that moment on, the books follow one long, brutal journey. With modern vehicles and communications mostly dead, Ben and Joel fight their way out of the backcountry and toward civilization—or what’s left of it. They pick up Allie, one of Joel’s classmates, and Ben quickly realizes that helping her may mean detouring hundreds of miles even as he worries about his two younger kids on the East Coast.

Early entries trace their eastbound slog through ruined small towns, improvised roadblocks and communities that are deciding, day by day, what kind of rules they’re going to live by now. Some people want to cooperate; others see the collapse as permission to take whatever they can. Miller leans hard into practical details: how you move a convoy without attracting attention, what gear actually matters, and how quickly desperation strips away politeness.

As the series grows, the world opens up. Ben eventually reaches Maryland and reconnects with his children and their stubborn grandfather, Jack, only to be forced back onto the road by new threats. Later books send the family west again toward Colorado, through mountain hollers ruled by moonshiners, stretches of highway prowled by bandits, and regions dominated by extremist gangs like the Patriot Hooligans.

What keeps the long arc grounded is the focus on family. Joel and Allie have to grow up fast, shifting from ordinary teens to fighters and caretakers without losing the core of who they are. Younger kids move from being passengers to active helpers. Dogs are part of the crew, not mascots, and injuries, grief and exhaustion all leave real marks that don’t magically disappear by the next chapter.

In tone, Dark Road is straightforward and tense rather than flashy—more about hard choices at a gas station, a farm or a back road than about secret bunkers or high-tech rescues. It’s also the backbone for Miller’s wider universe, feeding directly into The Durango Chronicles and loosely connecting with the Cloverdale and Dark Waters books. If you want the full sweep of Ben Davis’s story, start here and read the series in order.
